Paul Greenhalgh’s beautifully illustrated new book on the World’s Fairs will be published in May this year. From the very first exhibition in London in 1851 right up to the Shanghai expo in 2010, Fair World explores the fascinating history of the fairs, focusing on the key countries and periods that formed the exposition tradition.
In-depth academic research is accompanied by stunning historic images taken from the original catalogues and guidebooks, illuminating radical changes in exposition concepts and architectural design in 160 years of expo history. Fair World looks at the most important exhibitions, examining how they have reflected and even influenced our ideas about technology, national identity, architecture, art and humanity itself. It will appeal to anyone with an interest in history, architecture, art and design, anthropology, politics or cultural studies.
Paul Greenhalgh is our leading authority on the World’s Fairs. He is currently Director of the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia, and his former roles include Director and President of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC and Head of Research at the V&A, London.
